Selphie is active, outspoken and an energetic young girl who likes to do many extracurricular activities, such as planning the Garden Festival and running the school's website. She is a little clumsy and holds an oversized Nunchaku in battle, plus she pilots the Ragnarok airship. She's a bit childish, upbeat, hyperactive and always looking for some fun. Although she appears cute and ditzy, she is, by no means, unintelligent. She has good knowledge of computers and vehicles and throughout the game, she even runs her own website, is the head of the Garden Festival Committee, disarms and reprograms missiles and she instantly pick up the controls of the airship. She says a lot of cutely things and she became a fan of combining words to for her own new ones. She is also well known for her twisted logic and dark sense of humor. It would appear that her cheerfulness is born of desperation, out of a fear of acknowledging unhappiness, a trait that would've inadvertently been caused by her lonely time as an orphan. She is a loyal friend and is nice to have as company, as long as she isn't trying to get them to join the Garden Festival Committee, which she does numerous times throughout the game to every character. She makes a mission of bringing Squall out of his shell, which he doesn't like. She is also known for her obsession with trains and music.
Selphie is good-natured and she never fails to surprise her friends. She is quite agile and known for her talent to find her way out of a tight spot. Selphie is also a Nunchaku specialist, a weapon not easy to handle without expertise, especially since her own particular models seem to be about four times as large as normal Nunchaku. She is not rebellious and she carries out orders in her characteristically friendly manner and she never backs down from a challenge.
She most often wears a yellow mini-dress. It seems to be a miniskirt or overall hybrid featuring clasps that go over her shoulders and clip at the front of her dress. It also has a frontal zipper that has the full length of the dress and two large pockets located over the rear buttocks. Around her neck she sometimes wears a silver pendant that resembles a miniaturized replica of a poker machine reel and upon her left wrist she wears a blue strap. She wears brown cowboy boots that reach about mid-calf to complete her every ensemble. As a SeeD, she also wears her standard SeeD uniform.
Selphie also grew up in the orphanage and she made quick friends with them due to her electrifying personality and she even had a small crush on Irvine, who similarly returned her affection. Later, the orphanage was shut down and they were all separated. Selphie was the only one to move to Trabia and became a student at Trabia Garden, where GF's were hardly used. Her first Junction with a GF occurred during an outdoor training session when she found one inside a monster she was fighting. She junctioned it for a while, until she eventually lost it. She lost its name as well as all of her memories of her time at the orphanage. This is the price you must pay for relying on the power of a GF. When her training was complete at the age of 17, she transferred to Balamb Garden to undertake the SeeD Field Exam. She gets involved with the Garden Festival, which she didn't get to take part in back at Trabia Garden. You first met her when she accidentally runs into an unsuspecting Sqall and tells him where she's from and that Balamb Garden is so much bigger than Trabia Garden. She asks Squall to guide her through the Garden, so she won't get lost again. During the SeeD Field Exam, you meet her again, as she's a messenger from Squad A. She searches for Seifer and tells him about the new orders: to retreat at 1900 hours. Seifer isn't satisfied and leaves, so Selphie is forced to remain with the party for the rest of the exam. She passes the exam together with Squall, Zell and Nida. During the graduation party, she spends her time attempting to recruit people into helping her with the Garden Festival. In the morning, she's assigned a new mission along with Squall and Zell to assist the Forest Owls in Timber, lead by the 'princess', Rinoa. Their mission, to capture the president fails and they look for the president at the TV Station. Seifer was planning on assassinating the president and the party, along with Quistis, arrive when Seifer was taken away magically by the Sorceress.
The party is forced to leave Timber and head to the nearest Garden, where they learn of Seifer's supposed execution which leads Selphie and Rinoa into a conversation about love, as Rinoa dated Seifer last summer. The group is called to the front gate where they get new orders: to assassinate the Sorceress Edea in Deling City. They get a sniper, Irvine to do the job. So they head to Deling to meet General Caraway, father to Rinoa, who will explain more of the mission. Selphie is part of the "gateway team" along with Quistis and Zell and they need to trap the Sorceress between the bridge as her float passes through, so the other team with Squall and Irvine can kill her. They accomplish their mission, but the assassination fails and they are all captured in D-District Prison. Eventually they manage to escape, but they discover that Galbadia has ordered missile attacks on Balamb and Trabia Gardens. They split up and Selphie's team head towards the Missile Base to try to stop the missiles, while Squall's team head to Balamb Garden to warn them. As they're discussing the plan, missiles launch overhead in the direction of Trabia Garden. Selphie silently apologizes to Trabia for not being quick enough to save them, but pulls herself back together from her sorrow so that she can continue on with their mission. Selphie demands to go to the Missile Base, as she wants to take revenge for Trabia Garden. She infiltrates the base with a Galbadian vehicle and dress up as Galbadian soldiers to sneak past all of the guards. Selphie reprograms the remaining missiles in the base to self-destruct. The alarms start flashing and the three are finally discovered. They run outside where they are ambushed by a BGH251F2 Galbadian war machine that they quickly disable. However, the machine blocks the only available exit and effectively traps them inside the base to meet their demise. While the other two team-mates mourn their fate, Selphie remains hopeful that Squall chose the team selections for a reason. In quick thinking, she gets the party to take shelter inside the dysfunctional war machine just as the missile base self-destructs. Thought dead, the three remain inside the machine and pilot it when it becomes part of an invasion force against Fisherman's Horizon where Squall's team is forced to fight it until Selphie and the others can get out. All of them are reunited and the team learns of that Garden is now mobile and that they crashed into FH. The technicians of FH have promised to have it repaired by morning, but Selphie gets temporarily depressed over everything that's happened. Squall and Irvine cheer her up however, where she exclaims that "cheering up" wasn't something she ever expected from Squall, something he nearly takes offence to before leaving her in Irvine's capable hands. Selphie and Irvine organize a party in honor of Squall's promotion to Commander where they will play a song together for Squall and Rinoa will comfort him. The next morning, Selphie asks to pay a visit to Trabia so they can help them out to the fallen SeeD. Squall agrees and upon arriving, Selphie is reunited with some of her old friends and she gives respect to the gravesite for those who didn't make it. Later, they stand on the basketball field and they remember their past and that they all lived together in the orphanage (except Rinoa). Selphie confesses her experience with using a GF before she came to Balamb Garden, though recalls nothing about it, even its name. Selphie and the others are forced to accept the fact that their beloved Matron is now the Sorceress Edea. They decide to pay a visit to the orphanage to discover the source of the Sorceress' power. However, when they arrive in Centra, Balamb Garden is intercepted by Galbadia Garden, also mobile now and the Battle of the Gardens begin. Selphie helps out until the group is forced to face Edea. However, after the long battle, Edea is finally defeated and freed of her Sorceress' Powers, but Rinoa falls into unconsciousness due to a spell that is cast from the Sorceress.
Edea reveals that the ultimate goal of the Sorceress Ultimecia from the future, who had taken control over her, is Time Compression, which will compress all of time into a singular moment that only she can survive to recreate the world as she want it to be. They are very concerned about Rinopa's condition (especially Squall) so they go to the White SeeD ship to look for Ellone. They learn that Ellone is in Esthar, so Squall docks the Garden against Horizon's Bridge and ventures alone, the hundreds of miles with Rinoa on his back so that Ellone may bring them together again. However, Selphie and the others beat him to the continent in Garden and berate him for not trusting in his friends. They find their way into Esthar and find Ellone in the Lunar Base. While Squall takes Rinoa to the space station, the other stay behind to protect Edea, who still considers herself a threat since she can still be possessed by Ultimecia. The others soon find out about Lunatic Pandora passing Esthar City, they board it, but are repelled by an invisible force and forced to retreat until they can find a way through. When Squall returns with the awakened Rinoa, who now also holds Sorceress' powers, they brings along the Ragnarok airship and Selphie declares herself its pilot. They make sure Rinoa won't be sealed within the Sorceress Memorial and they head to the old orphanage where they express their elation over Squall and Rinoa being together. They are soon called back by Laguna, the President of Esthar and Dr. Odine, to defeat Sorceress Ultimecia once and for all. They use the Ragnarok to invade into Lunatic Pandora to defeat Sorceress Adel. Afterwards, Ultimecia succeeds in casting Time Compression by using Ellone to send her consciousness even further back into time and allowing her to exist in all past, present and future simultaneously. However, since spell is not instantaneous and takes time to cast, Zell and the others survive the effects by believing strongly in each others existences. This allows them to travel to the future where they can destroy Ultimecia before Time Compression is completed.
The story ends at midnight over a vast ocean where a celebration is held for defeating Ultimecia. Selphie spends the entire time video taping the moments of all her friends as well as saving Zell from choking on his hot dogs. It is implied here that Selphie and Irvine have begun developing feelings for each other as she wears his cowboy hat and gets jealous when he flirts with other girls. Her video taping ends on the balcony where Squall and Rinoa share in their first kiss.
Selphie fights with the Nunchaku in battle. Her models are oversized, which she uses with surprising grace for usually being quite clumsy. Using higher models will increase Selphie's attack power and hit accuracy. However, they have no effect on how much damage her Limit Break does.
