Final Fantasy VIII

And so, Laguna runs for dear life.
Quote by: Kiros, Narrating deadpan as Laguna runs from a dragon on a movie set

Diablos

Diablos is an optional GF, since you must gain him from an activated item after which you'll have to defeat him. Since you'll get the item right after being assigned for the Timber mission, which is pretty early in the game, it may prove as a very hard battle. But it's all worth it, since not only his strength in battle is of great use, but also his abilities are very good. It is stated in-game that long-term Junctioning of Guardian Forces causes memory loss to the user, because the GF draw power from the same section of the mind that stores memories, so using them is not without risks. I always liked this GF, he looks so strong and upon calling him from the item, he's mad because you've awakened him from his sleep. Though he is listed after the GF Brothers, he can be obtained earlier. Make sure you save your game before using the item to fight Diablos.

Diablos deals non-elemental damage to all enemies, so it can be used against all kinds of enemies. However, there are some enemies that are immune or have protection against his attack.

Location

After being assigned to the Timber Mission at the Front Gate of Balamb Garden, speak with Cid again to obtain a Magical Lamp. This Lamp can be used at an time, but save your game first! It is actually a portal to a different dimension, one where the GF Diablos is waiting. So when you use the Lamp, you'll be automatically thrust into battle against Diablos. The Boss if very tough, so you might wanna build up your party before attempting the fight. He uses main Time-based magic to drain your HP. He holds the spell Demi, which you can stock, but you can also use it against him. Selphie's Full-Cure Limit Break is very useful during the battle. After winning the battle, you'll also receive his Card and he'll join your party to fight with you.

Diablos' Attack: Dark Messenger

Diablos deals non-elemental damage, and at first, you may think that his attack is useless and it won't cause much more than around 100 points of damage to most enemies. However, after he gets some Experience and gained a few levels, its attack will quickly become one of the most lethal attacks in the game. His summon attack deals damage in relation to the enemies maximum HP count via a percentage equal to Diablos' level range (with a set damage limit at 9999). For instance, casting a level 25 Diablos on somebody with 1000 HP, will constantly deal 200 damage, and will even kill the opponent, in contrast with other Gravity-based attacks. Meaning, at level 100, he will kill any foe with less than 9999 HP as it maximum health, useful for the beginning portions of the game before acquiring (and leveling up) Jumbo Cactuar and Eden. The Dark Messenger attack will not touch anybody immune to Gravity-based attacks, leaving most bosses untouchable for the summon. Also, if Diablos is below level ten, his attack will deal 9% of enemies maximum health in damage. A lot of bats form a big ball of energy, out of which Diablos appears, he'll stretch his wings and holds up his arm towards the big ball. He'll draw energy to the ball and then pulls it down and thrushes it onto the enemies.

Useful Abilities

Mug is one of the best abilities in the game. It will enable you to steal useful and oftentimes rare items from your enemies, while dealing damage at the same time. You can use the items to upgrade weapons faster, teach Guardian Forces rare abilities and create hard-to-find magic and items through refining. Diablos' Abilityx3 ability is also useful. It enables a character to equip three GF abilities instead of the normal two. Also great abilities are Enc-Half and Enc-None, which will half the amount of battles you have to fight and the latter will make sure you won't have any random encounters. This last ability is great for completing quests, such as the Centra Ruins. But don't equip this ability for too long, as you won't gain any experience and thus you won't level up, which might make upcoming battles too hard.

History

Diablos (ディアボロス, Diaborosu, French: Nosferatu), also known as Diabolos, is a recurring Summon in the Final Fantasy games. The damage it does is non-elemental, but Gravity based.
