Final Fantasy VIII

Super-Duper-Mega-Bummer!!
Quote by: Selphie

Shiva

Shiva is your first Guardian Force, together with Quezacotl. So if you're new to the game or playing it for the first time, it's one of the GF's that will help you understanding the Junction System. It is stated in-game that long-term Junctioning of Guardian Forces causes memory loss to the user, because the GF draw power from the same section of the mind that stores memories, so using them is not without risks. Shiva is one of my favorite GF's in the game, I love the way she performs, she performs with such grace. And she must be very flexible, as she almost folds her back when she bends over backwards to deal massive damage!

Shiva is very helpful when dealing with Fire elemental enemies, since she deals Ice elemental damage, which is the weakness of Fire elemental enemies.

Location

By accessing Squall's study panel from his desk in the classroom at Balamb Garden, you can gain two new GF's. Select the Tutorial option and Shiva will automatically be added to your GF inventory, along with Quezacotl.

Shiva's Attack: Diamond Dust

Diamond Dust is an Ice elementary based attack and she'll throw big blocks of ice around the enemy, then quickly shattering it with just a snap of her fingers.

Useful Abilities

Shiva's Vitality+ and Spirit+ abilities are very useful for improving a character's stats at the beginning of the game. These will enable one of your characters to have a strong defence against both physical and magical attacks without having a lot of powerful magic for Junctioning to Vitality or Spirit. Also, her Doom ability is useful until you're able to draw or refine Death magic spells later. The ability will enable you to cast Slow Death on a single target, which can be very useful. And I Mag-RF will let you refine Ice and Water spells from some items you've found.

History

Shiva (シヴァ, Shiva) is a frequently recurring summoned creature that usually takes the shape of a blue woman. Her signature attack Diamond Dust, sometimes called Gem Dust, deals Ice elemental damage. Along with Ifrit and Bahamut, she is one of the only summons to appear in every main series game from Final Fantasy III till Final Fantasy XI. Shiva shares her name with the Hindu god, Shiva (also spelled Śiva). Shiva once saved the world by consuming poison, giving him/her blue skin around the area of the neck and throat. It should also be mentioned that Shiva is a god of duality, meaning Shiva is both male and female (though more often thought of as male), as well as god of life and death. Also, in paintings Shiva was frequently mistaken for a woman due to his long hair and facial features. There is a possibility that the name was simply the Japanese way of pronouncing the word "Shiver", which is a possibility given her icy nature. It is believed that she also periodically destroys the world then re-creates it.
