Final Fantasy VIII

I got 'n twouble.
Quote by: Laguna, talking to the young Ellone

Tonberry King

Jumbo Cactuar is an optional GF that you will only obtain when completing a Side-Quest. You have to go to the Centra Ruins and fight 18 - 22 Tonberry's. Tonberry King will appear randomly directly after a battle with a small Tonberry. It is stated in-game that long-term Junctioning of Guardian Forces causes memory loss to the user, because the GF draw power from the same section of the mind that stores memories, so using them is not without risks. When I first saw Tonberry King, I though 'Wow...', I really thought he looked big and strong. But when I saw his attack for the first time, he does 'Doink' when he hits with his knife. Hilarious!

Tonberry King attacks a single enemy at random. At first, it's a weak attack, but it'll become stronger later in the game when he gains some experience.

Location

Go to the Centra Ruins and after you have obtained Odin, you can take on the second Side-Quest to obtain Tonberry King. You have to fight 18 - 22 little Tonberry's and Tonberry King will appear randomly directly after a battle with a small Tonberry. You must then defeat him so he'll join the party. Refer to the Side-Quest Tonberry King or more info.

Tonberry King's Attack: Chef's Knife

Tonberry attacks a single enemy at random. The attack isn't worth much in the beginning, but it'll become much more valuable over time. The animation for the attack is relatively short, so you won't be able to do much Boosting.

Useful Abilities

Once you have Tonberry on your side, your shopping experiences will be much more enjoyable. The Familiar ability adds items to every shop, some of which are relatively difficult to find. Call Shop is also nice, because it lets you revisit any shop you've been to in the past by using the Menu. This is extremely useful in Disc 4. The LV Down and LV Up abilities are also kind of fun. Use them to beef up weaker monster or to give more pathetic creatures a fearsome bite. Adjusting creatures' levels enables you to customize your battles and choose when you want a touch battle or gain a rare item from an enemy.

History

Tonberry (トンベリ, Tonberi) is a recurring monster in the Final Fantasy games, but it has appeared as a Summon in some games.
